Icon encoding

This section only discusses how to reference the icons to be displayed, not how they will be displayed (which will be discussed in the following sections). Both encoding methods can be combined.

  •  Single icon introduction

    • By Gardiner / JSesh code

[RECOMMENDED] The most explicit way to enter an icon is by its catalogation number (as specified in the JSesh application, which follows the Gardiner's Icon List standard). This identification works as follows: [FAMILY CODE]+[NUMBER]+[VARIANT LETTER, optional]. Beware that many new icons and variants were added in Medu Netcher, and were catalogued following the same system.

    • By phonetical value

Icons can also be entered using their phonetic value. Standard transliteration encoding of the Latin alphabet must be used. However, please note that this can cause incorrect icon encoding, as there are phonetic values that can correspond to multiple icons and only the first one will be displayed. Many icons also do not have defined phonetic values. There may also be adjustments to phonetic values in the future, so the same encoding could display different icons as the app is updated. [WARNING] For all these reasons, we recommend using the Gardiner/JSesh coding method.

    • Combined method

Both types of codifications can be combined as well. Same notes and warnings as in "By phonetical value" apply here.
